Emloi

Responsibilities

UXUI, Product Design & Web Design

Project Brief

Emploi is a social good project that I worked on as a part of the Google UX Design Professional Certificate course. Emploi is an app service that helps first-generation immigrants to find and apply for jobs. The app is catered towards jobs for specific skills unlike most apps. The app also provides assistance and workshops to help people be a better fit.

The problem

First Generation Immigrants struggle to use the skills they bring from their country of origin because they lack the exposure to opportunities that they can qualify for.

The Goal

Design an app that is catered to first-generation immigrants to assist them with the job market and match them with new opportunities.

My Role

UI/UX designer taking the idea of the app from conception to delivery.

Responsibilities

Conducting interviews, wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.

User research: Summary

For this project, I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the needs of the users I’m designing for. One primary user group identified through my research was first-generation immigrants nearby who work in jobs because of their circumstances.

User research: Pain Points

Language

Users are afraid that most jobs available require them to speak English.

Resources

Users do not have access to a diversity of jobs.

Credentials

Users have issues using their foreign credentials to apply for some jobs.

Starting the design

  • Digital wireframes
  • Low-fidelity prototype
  • Usability studies

Digital wireframes

Low-fidelity Prototype

I created a low-fidelity prototype for a job app and customization system based on the research I conducted. The prototype was intended to be used in a usability study.

Usability study: Findings

I carried out two rounds of usability testing, which informed the development of the design from wireframes to mockups. The second study utilized a high-fidelity prototype and identified areas that needed improvement.

Round 1 findings

  • Back Buttons
  • Options to Save Application

Round 2 findings

  • Messaging Option
  • Review Old Applications

Refining the design

  • Mockups
  • High-fidelity prototype
  • Accessibility

Mockups

Initially, the design only allowed for limited customization and functionality. Following the usability studies, I redesigned the main screen to serve as the landing and menu page.

High-fidelity Prototype

The final high-fidelity prototype resulted in a streamlined user flow that allows for easy customization and ordering in a few steps.

Accessibility Considerations

Large buttons with high contrast + bold text to assist visually impaired users.

I included icons to improve the user experience.

I used high-detail imagery and will include alt text and captions for accessibility.

Takeaways

Impact:

The app makes users feel like they can apply for jobs that meet their interests and provide them with the opportunities that they want.

What I learned:
During the process of designing the Emploi App, I discovered that initial ideas are usually quite rough and there is a significant gap between the initial concept and the polished version. Usability studies helped to refine the design of the app.
